for the magazine, that is. i think it would be great if summer soldier or anyone of the more well read members of this site could do some write ups for some more interesting and not so well known manga. not to say that the editorials so far weren't nice , just that most of them are famous in scanlations anyway

I wouldn't mind doing it, but I'm pretty sure that stephen, Izumi and himiko would appreciate it if I spent my time and energy translating, rather than writing about, manga. Plus, I'd end up writing up about untranslated manga...

Well it wouldn't be too bad if you could find extra time to do it and not slow down on translations... and actually reviewing untranslated manga would be great ~_~
its all dependent on the person... we just need more enthusiastic writers period

Hey, Summer, maybe you could review River's Edge, even though it's been scanlated recently few people've read it, and it's a really impressive work, even though I myself didn't like it very much -not because of the art, it just... gave me a bad feeling-. If I remembre correctly, it was on your top 10, so...

Anyone could review River's Edge now that it's available in English (or some form of it, at least).

If I wrote about River's Edge, I'd probably end up sounding very bitter at the fact that somebody else did it *glares at Pokute*

Anyway, since I have very little time to do anything other than trying to make a living, I'd rather use that time to translate manga, especially when other people can write reviews far better than I can.

I have to admit that I never read "River's Edge" and after browsing through the release of JJ I feel even less like reading it. The art is just too much for my eyes to handle. Don't get me wrong, I don't say it's bad, it just gives an ordinary reader like me a hard time to concentrate on the story. I have read lot of unconventionally drawn mangas ranging from Man-gatarou's to Tsuge Yoshiharu's and came to the conclusion that I prefer Urushihara's/U-Jin's works even if their stories are of questionable quality. Anyway, RE might be a good piece of art but I doubt that it can attract anything more than some art students or die-hard manga aficionados.

And since this is a thread about interesting mangas, why the heck has nobody done "King of Editors"?? Smile

Is the art in River’s Edge that hard to like? I’m not directing this questioning at Kotonoha in particular, because I’ve heard plenty of other people talking about how they dislike the art (although they usually ended up liking RE anyway). My first exposure to Kyoko Okazaki was Pink actually, and not River’s Edge, but even when I first read Pink, the art never bothered me. I don’t think Kyoko Okazaki’s art is dazzling or anything, but I certainly think that it’s passable. I think I actually kinda like the poppy feel that her art has.

Of course I’m one of those people that like unconventionally drawn manga (I definitely prefer Tsuge and Man-gatarou over U-Jun), but I don’t think Kyoko Okazaki is THAT unconventional. Calling her a mainstream artist might be a stretch (and subject to your definition of the word “mainstream”), but I think it’s safe to say that her appeal reaches beyond die-hard manga aficionados in any case.

As for “King of Editors” (I’m assuming you mean “Henshuu-Oh” by Seiki Tsuchida), the reason I never suggested doing it, despite the fact that it’s one of my fave mangas of all time, is that it’s too freaking long (16 volumes) for me to handle…

I don't think Okazaki-sensei's art is that good, but that didn't turn me off. I still enjoyed River's Edge. (It's the story that matters.)

Hmm, maybe I could swallow Man-gatarou's art because his stories are mostly angry satires which'd give the applied drawing style a new perspective. At least you can laugh at his silly drawings. Anyway, how about we scanlating one his works to see the reactions of Western fans? I can imagine that his mangas are very difficult to translate -if at all- though. "Jigoku Koushien" might be a bit long, but I can do the one-volume "Gatarou-sensei arigatou" (err, I must be insane ^^) if some1 volunteer to translate. ^^

@SS: Exactly. Henshuu-oh. A manga about the manga industry has yet to appear on the Western shore. And I can't think of any work which's better than this one.

SS, translate "Pink" and I will edit it. Smile

PS There is a live-action Jigoku Koushien out/coming out very soon...but it just looks flat-out bad.

I can't imagine Gatarou's mangas can work well in live-action form. ^^;;;
