Reading the news section on the site of artist Kan Takahama (a contributor to Garo and now Erotics F), I came across this paragraph about an upcoming short story of hers (written in English):
"A short story for TCJ. Many cartoonists worldwide joined this project and Ioh Kuroda is also contributing to this number as Japanese.
The Comics Journal Winter Special 2004 (U.S.A) January."
This will be the first time any Japanese cartoonists have contributed to the Journal specials, which mostly consisted of North American alternative cartoonists (and some European cartoonists) in previous editions, but I suppose they're on a roll after printing the English translation of "Nejishiki" in their 250th issue earlier this year. In previous issues, each comic was no more than 3 pages (as Takahama's will be), so I'm assuming the same will be true of Kuroda--and that it will be a new strip.
The Specials themselves are mixed bags--high quality production, good articles, but the comics section which is supposed to be the big draw of these issues are usually toss-offs by good artists or too short to make much of an impression. Hopefully, Kuroda and Takahama can avoid that fate.
I think this is the first time Iou Kuroda will be officially published in English, unless you count "Garage Days" which appeared in Kodansha's bilingual 1996 comic "Manga Surprise".

So Gary Groth and company FINALLY decided to lower their egos to allow Japanese artists to be printed in TCJ? I like the nice barb about the "Specials." |

Interesting choice of artists. While we're at it, Kan Takahama could use a little more exposure in Japan as well, although I think it will come eventually. I can actually envision her gaining the same status in the future that artists like Kiriko Nananan (who also debuted in Garo) and Naito Yamada currently enjoy. She's too stylish for that not to happen.
I would LOVE to get a hold of a copy of that issue, but alas, living in Japan, I’m not too optimistic of my chances. Hopefully, they'll be collected in a tankoubon in the future. But I would definitely be interested in knowing how someone else translates an Iou Kuroda work! |

I forgot to mention that an English-language collection of her work, titled appropriately enough "Kinderbook" is being released in either November or December (supposedly--the original release date was October, and you never know with small companies) by Fan Fare and Ponent Mon. I'm presuming most (all?) of it will be from "Yellowbacks". There was also an original story by Takahama in the 2nd issue of the French anthology BAM, about her trip to Angouleme.
