Sorry that there haven't been any releases in a few weeks -- I'm on Christmas vacation and won't be doing any translation until I get back on Jan. 9th. Chapter 3 is about 80% done so hopefully it will be out in 2 weeks or so, and then more "regular" releases should begin again.

I don't like the story so far, but the art is prettyish Razz

But yes, it's all about where he goes with it... the problem with most classic SF themes is that if you use them you walk a thin line between greatness and really corny cliché... Rolling Eyes

This manga reminded me a lot of the movie Cube - but I guess that would just be the element of throwing a bunch of strangers together in a situation where they have to work together to get out of hazardous-to-life situations.
I haven't watched any of Blue Gender yet.

I guess the story is a bit clichéd, but it's still interesting. It has the element of these people not really having long to live anyway, and the twin sister the main character is looking for.

The art really reminds me of US comic artists Humberto Rico and Chris Bachelo. They both have the same "bulging" flow of muscles, er... the shape of humans, their limbs. When they draw them. I guess that made no sense what-so-ever, but bear with me.
But I really like it, the art. It's different from most manga. And those US artists I mentioned are one of my favourite US artists.

What's the deal with the Japanese and non-curable diseases that petrify you?

Good to know someone likes it. All the feelings towards this manga (including those of the translator) seem pretty ambivalent. Smile

You're probably referring to Eden. Yet another stolen plot element. *gasp*

It's sort of getting better. But I'm still peeved that there is still no mecha.

I'll give it a chance until the plot gets really monotonous and built by naught but clichés... besides, the action is pretty well depicted, and a whole bunch of it too - who doesn't like good action everynow and then? Wink

HuhWhat: (great username, by the way....)

Yep, I was referring to Eden... I wonder if this is a regular theme in japanese storytelling culture...

I hope there won't be any mecha in King of Thorns - they wouldn't really fit there, considering the type of atmosphere the story's been building up.

Though they would be kind of handy in fencing with a 4 metre tall (12 feet, yes?) bipedal lizard with big pointy teeth, now wouldn't they?

Just read volume 1, it was pretty interesting. Yeah it does seem like it has the standard sci-fi themes. I thought of Planet of the Apes, Eden, Dragon Head, Battle Royale, Space and Tale of the Future from Phoenix, etc. Never seen Blue Gender or Cube...

Still, its pretty addictive. I'm curious to know how the world got that way. I like the art and its a nice quick read too without lots of dialogue.

You'd think they'd be bigger risk-takers since they all have life threatening diseases.

I hope to do some more translating of this in a little bit (I have a vacation this weekend, but maybe next week).

Volume 3 was unimpressive and a little boring but a quick read like the rest of the series (I especially dislike the resolution of volume 2's "cliffhanger" -- it won't seem as bad if there's not a big lapse of time between the release of chapter 11 and chapter 12). Volume 4 finally starts to get to the meat of the story and answers some of the questions, and it revived my interest. Volume 5 should be out fairly soon (within 1-3 months).

(We need someone to edit the final chapters of volume 2...)
