I definitely agree with that. That must be because of Nihei's education and his previous work experience. But the dept of his background imagery is not only a creation of an artitechts design ability but a twisted mixture of technique and creativity.

And for the designs I need to mention Yoshitaka Amano.

Yoshitaka Amano is a great artist, and very trendy... but i wouldn't say original... he definitely has his influences... (some which look awful similar)

Hiroaki Samura, Naoki Urasawa. Who are also the authour-artists of my favorite comics.
I love both 'em storytelling styles, it's like watching a movie while you read. Samura's a bit more artsy though... he's also a better illustrator (as in poster artworks), but Urasawa is the master of intensive facial expressions, period.

Otherwise I quite like Takehiko Inoue.

I used to really like Richard Corben and Katsuhiro Otomo. Even ignoring Otomo's panelling and page layouts, I still like when his art tries to get away from placing the reader in the eye of a character. A lot of mainstream artists do this now, but I've seen few do it as well as Otomo. Ignoring the panelling though, I'm not sure I'd say the drawing alone is worth reading his comics for (the writing clearly isn't).

For drawing characters, I really like Masahiko Kikuni (only read Heart Broken Angels though) and (in a completely different vein) Charles Burns. Naoki Yamamoto's got a nice, playful style too, and I remember my first impression of Dance till Tomorrow was that the story sucked, but I liked how he somehow passed as a successful genre artist when Aya's hand looked like a garden tool. It seemed to be an interesting combination of talent and laziness.

Another artist who I think can sometimes appear lazy but is still wildly talented and original (moreso than Yamamoto) is Gary Panter. But Panter is one of the few artists where it's usually impossible to separate his writing from his art and design.

On the other hand I enjoyed National Quiz pretty much just for the excellent art.

Lately I've been looking at Paul Pope's artwork, and I'm going to have to get some of his comics to see how they are. By itself the art is fantastic, my first impression is that it looks something like a cross between Iou Kuroda and Naoki Yamamoto.

IŽd have to go with opossites such as Adachi (love the faces, so simple... but great simple!) and Yuki Urushibara (Mushishi), but also mention Otomo (I remember reading Domu when I was younger and still not the expert I am now (?) and thinking "wow!... there really is a thing as manga artists), Kuroda of course, and Taiyo Matsumoto (I love him).
I also really like Asada and InoueŽs work, but on a lesser scale, they draw incredibly but are less able to leave you breathless than the previous authors; probably something to do with their art being more "classic". Yet, Vagabond is just amazing.

As you can probably tell from my avatar (borrowed gratefully from Kotonoha's projects page) I love the way Kuroda draws girls' faces, especially when they're angry or upset.

The other artist whose facial expressions I really love is Mizuki Kawashita. And I'm not afraid to admit it, even though I was abused in the IRC channel for saying I like Ichigo 100%.
