There's a new Kuroda Iou series that started in this month's Afternoon called "Mishi". It makes very little sense; it's only 8 pages long and is just this bizarre monster that lives in a neighborhood. I don't really see what the point of it is.

YKK's typically 16.

Seraphic Feather is the Afternoon series that averages 8-12 pages a month, but that's because Utatane's lazy.

I'll put it up on the dump if I get it.
Chances are fairly good seeing as I've gotten just about every single other series running in Afternoon this month,

[edit] Yeah it was already in my incoming folder: I'll put it up.

Mishi was pretty fucked.

Like I said, I'm missing the entire point I think -- there's no plot or attempt at any sort of coherent storytelling, and the chapter is so short that you hardly even know where it's going.

To be quite honest I didn't think very much of Mishi: I was much more excited about one of the other new series starting this issue, Lorelei, and the fact this issue had Mushishi.
Also I was disappointed that Historie was on hiatus this month.

Whoa, I didn't know about this. This wasn't announced in last month's issue, was it? I think I definitely would have noticed if it was. I really do need to buy this month's issue as a matter of urgency (I usually don't buy Afternoon the day it comes out, since Ikki also comes out on the 25th).

8 pages per chapter isn’t abnormal at all, actually. There are plenty of series that have installations of the same or shorter length.

Probably not, based on the number of times they wrote "the SUDDEN RETURN of Kuroda Iou" in the issue.

Mishi was weird.

Speaking of Iou Kuroda and Afternoon, kern (or Neuro or stephen), did you read the (excellent, at least in my opinion) one-shot about the baseball guy and the art club girl? The style (not so much the art, but the rhythm and pacing, and the spunkiness of the girl) reminded me a bit of Kuroda. Perhaps his influence is finally starting to make itself felt in the manga world? I'd like to see more material by this author - it's a shame that I missed his/her Shiki-winning manga when it ran during a period when I wasn't reading Afternoon.

Haven't read Lorelei yet. The art didn't really appeal to me when I glanced through it while fervently looking for Me And The Devil Blues, but I'll make sure to give it a read. And yeah, it sucks that Historie is on hiatus.

P.S. Is it just me, or has the quality of Afternoon improved markedly recently? I distinctly remember thinking "this magazine is pure filth" a while ago, but that no longer seems to be the case, the dandy little bonuses they include with the magazine (and slap on an extra 100 yen to the list price) notwithstanding.

"How Tokorosawa-san came to hit her home-run" or something like that?
Yeah it was excellent. And there were definitely similarities in style with Kuroda (something T Shibata mentioned in his review on OHP too).

As for the magazine itself, there is a lot of crap I wouldn't touch with a 20-foot pole wrapped in 3 xxx-large condoms (Ah My Goddess, Gunsmith Cats Burst, Nanahan, etc) but overall, I find it quite readable.

Speaking of stuff that is remniscient of Kuroda, someone in the channel posted a link to this web comic, which I find startlingly similar in style, at times (Especially this one). It also helps that the writer has a wicked sense of humor.
