i was wondering why manga never went the "full color" route the way mainstream american comics have-- was there an unspoken general preference for graytones, or was it purely an economic decision on part of the publishers, or was it simply a case of "we've always done this way, let's respect the tradition"?

not that it think manga should go full-color. i think sticking to b&w has done only good for its visual evolution.

IMO its all about economics. If ppl buy b&w comics why would they need color ones? Which are more expensive and shitz...

I think it's not only about economics, tradition plays a big part in all this, being a fan of both comics and manga i can say that both sides like their classic style, and i mean people tend to see b&w as the lesser of the 2 and IMO, black and white art can be as descriptive as color art (if not more), and about the prices well it's almost the same thing and if you think about it when it comes to volumes manga readers win since you always get the usual 200 something pages + some extras, while comic readers only get like 5 24 pages issues crammed into a "new" book for almost the same price, i think it's a bit hard to see the reason for the tradition in the end, and IMO it should be left as it is.

Yes.

Terazawa Buichi's Cobra was re-released as a full-color edition.

there are some manga that seem to use color schemes, like orange and black. Doraemon does that sometimes, and at times, full color.

You can never be sure the manga will be succesfull. Colouring cost way more and takes a lot of time.
