i went to the bookstore today, and lo and behold... like a ray of light from heaven shining into the middle of the bookstore there was one copy left on the new releases rack... what am i talking about, you say? well that's obvious, my friends... the beck 13 + cd pack!! i am surprisingly not lamenting the 26 dollars it cost me (as opposed to 6 for the regular book). the music isn't too bad so far... i suppose i should rip some mp3's of it tonight and put them on the staff ftp so people can start getting them and serving them in the channel.
i also got one piece 26, which i wasn't expecting to be there so quick, but hey i'm not complaining at all hehehehehehe... i feel like sergeant keroro gloating over his new room... |

I think Edgar Allen Poe went to VT. Isn't there some painting he made on a wall or something? I vaguely remember that from when I had to study him two or three years ago. Not saying that makes the school good, but it's cool to think about it.
The two funniest moments of my life happened today. First, at like 5:30 am my brother got home. He tried to pull in but he was so drunk he missed the driveway by like 3 feet. Now, drunk driving isn't cool, but this was some funny crap. The back of his car was like three feet in the air and the front was in the ditch. I was taking a shower and he screamed at me, "Man, I'm so drunk, and my car is in the ditch. You better get out here and help me." He laughed the whole time through this. A couple of minutes later, " Bitch! Get out here and help me! You got two minutes!" So I went out there and this hispanic dude from across the street, who was outside in his truck, helped us get it out.
When I got home from school, he and two of his friends were there. Some lady called the wrong number, apparently she wanted to talk to Suzy Kennedy about buying some dogs. So my bro's friend Matt started talking to her like he was Suzy. I could only listen to one side of the conversation, so here are some of the funnier quotes.
"Yeah, we sold about 15, 000 dogs in the last two years. We're slowly climbing to the top. These dogs are selling like hotcakes!"
"Hold on, let me get my husband. (Matt now talks in a deep voice) Yes, we've got this great new buy one get one free deal. We just have so many puppies."
"Yes, she's a beautiful dog. She's kind of fat, but she's got great fur and eyes and a tight butt."
'Did you just say monkey? Oh, sorry I thought you said monkey."
"That's it, I know you said monkey that time. Yeah, sure. You said monkey."
" Hold on a second, one of those monkey dogs is hupming my leg. The monkey dogs just have a humping problem, it's not a big deal."
That's all I really remember. She bought it the whole time. |

Have you ripped them?
Are they songs by the Mongolian Chop Squad? That would be so cool! I wanna listen to them! |

i welcome all stalkers if they can point out what i want with flashlights like that.
btw, i did rip them and you can get them at dead_meat's fserve as well as others in the channel. no, they're not MCS mp3's, but they're still pretty good. the first song on the cd (sorry, i forgot what the band was) sounds pretty much exactly like what you'd expect beck to sound like.
what a coincidence, that someone should resurrect this thread today because i went to the bookstore again for the first time since i posted it. first of all, i got my february issue of shonen jump and my sasuga order of saikano in the mail, then at the asahiya, i got some... touch, katsu, eden, blame, gantz, mpd psycho, kaizo, berserk, and zipang. good readin'! |

i think this is going to become the "stevo's reading journal" thread.
went to the bookstore today. was rather surprised and disappointed to see there were absolutely NO new one piece 27 or hunter x hunter 16, and not surprised to find no beck 14, but that's too new to be in america already. curses followed. so instead i picked up some evangelion, berserk, gantz, and 2 hiroki endo short story collections, on the recommendation of summer soldier. i'll probably edit this and give my opinions once i've read all of these. |

Ooh, I'm so proud of you Be sure to tell me what you think of them, especially Platform. I read several volumes of Gantz at, you guessed it, a manga cafe. Pretty damn good series. So they didn't have Believers? |

unfortunately i could not find believers. but you were indeed right, those short stories were great. they were just long enough that i was disappointed when they ended. one thing that eventually caught my attention was the rather disproportionate number of hypothetical statements and sage "observations of life", but endo manages to integrate them so smoothly and they serve the purpose of expressing his messages so well that it's hardly noticeable until you've read two whole volumes worth of them.
some of the yakuza terminology was a bit over my head, but i can probably use this as a good opportunity to learn a bit of the lingo... platform was quite dark, easily the most depressing of all the stories, IMHO. i take it this must have been a rather publicized or celebrated work of his, given the mention he made of it in his afterword...(?) on the other hand, his self-portrait story about high school girls was hilarious :)
and yes, i'm rather helplessly sucked in gantz right now. oku's over-the-top large breast fetish aside, it's one of the more enjoyably surreal things i've ever seen... more dark humor than you can shake a stick at. perhaps most interesting of all are the characters and their believably twisted personalities. kato might be the ideal archetypal hero, but the rest are far from altruistic... it's quite fascinating. |
