summer: you're not missing much, most of the time they just kill the manga they're based on... however there are some gems like:
The patlabor oav and movies (and other stuff by that company like jin roh)
Classics like Akira
and of course Hayao Miyazaki (and Grave of the Fireflies)

Note that besides the patlabor Oav i didn't include anything that wasn't a movie... and truthfully there aren't any anime series that really rank high in my opinion.

Wings of Honneamise is a diamond in the ruff. Its got so much provacative thought causing stuff, but doesn't go overboard like later Gainax stuff. Its tough and realistic, edgy and it just keeps you hooked until the end. Its got amazing animation, especially the in flight footage. Not to mention its music is by academy award winning composer and cyberpunk Ryuuichi Sakamoto. Problem is it is often overshadowed by Gainax's later work on Eva. Without Eva, Honneamise would have easily been the anime Gainax was identified with. They started out good but it was all down hill from there.

Well, yeah, I guess I like Hayao Miyazaki. I mean, what Japanese person doesn't? So if someone pointed a gun to my head and demanded to know what my favorite anime was, I'd probably blurt out "Laputa."

The reason I didn't mention it is that 1) I didn't want to sound like one of those people who are disdainful of anime in general except those by Miyazaki (the same of sort of people who think that pop music is crap, but listen to the Beatles) and 2) I felt that my repository of anime knowledge was way too limited for my opinion to hold any sort of credibility. I'm not saying that you have to be an expert, but I do feel that there's a line--a line that I fail to reach. By a fairly large margin.

As for my experiences with other anime, other than the stuff I remember watching as a little kid (Doraemon, Kinniku Man, Dragon Ball, etc), the guy who lived next to me tried to get me into Evangelion during my college dorm years. He failed miserably; I literally fell asleep watching it. Several years later, I rented Escaflowne at a video store on a whim. The only reaction it ignited in me was "huh?" (deep apologies to himiko).

I guess my taste in manga has a lot to do with it. As you may or may not have noticed, a good proportion of the manga that I read wouldn't translate that well to the anime form. I mean, if I was the kind that dug artists like Kosuke Fujishima and Kenichi Sonoda, then yeah, I can see myself watching anime. But I hate those artists. The ones that I like are people like Kyoko Okazaki and Akira Sasou (not that they have too many in common with each other, except for being excellent storytellers), and if their works were reproduced on the screen, it would probably be live action, not animated.

As for the anime you recommended, I was doubtful at first, but then you mentioned Ryuichi Sakamoto. That might just be the shove in the back that I need.

Summer: I suggest you check out Wings of Honneamise, i promise you won't regret it.

LupinIII Castle of Cagliostro is a classic, i mean you just can't go wrong with Monkey Punch's classic Lupin gang directed by Hayao Miyazaki!

Nah, it's ok Summer. What you like and dislike are really based on your taste for things. For me I'm into Astrology and Fantasy so Escaflowne appealed very much to me. On the flip side, I don't really like robots and stuff so things like Gundam never worked out for me even lotsa people keep saying it is good. I haven't watch at lot of anime in general either, mainly because manga is much bigger here than anime.

For me this movie is just how perfect anime should be :] And 'Wings of Honneamise' is more like a normal movie than anime... But it surely is great :]
