I place a heavy book on top of my manga when I scan it.

A weight is a MUST for scanning. Key things:

- Never use your hands! Using hands can create slices in the scan and
litte wobbles, which suck ^_^

- When doing double page scans (2 pages at a time, not necessarily a double art pagw) get the book as STRAIGHT as you can to avoid gutter bends + shadow

- When doing vertical scans (like myself) use a ruler taped down to the scanner to make a guide to keep the book straight, and there will be no gutter shadow nor bends.

- Clean the glass before each scanning session to get rid of finger prints, dust, etc. This will provide for a better, cleaner scan

I would reccommend you use Vuescan to do your scanning, it is VERY customizable and you can set you own crop regions. Best thing about Vuescan though, is that when you can set a save folder, and by adding *+1.jpg to the file you can do a scanning session, and not have to worry about saving each file, making it a /Hit scan button, Turn page, Hit scan button, etc/. And that is good ^_~
