I know its kinda early, but I'm bored shitless >,<
1)British Seapower - the decline of British sea power
think joy division/echo and the bunnymen/the pixies an amazing debut album
2)Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
a very solid album with many classics like 2+2=5, Sit down, Stand up and Wolf at the door
3)The wrens - the meadowlands
where have they been o_o, a 7 year gap between this and their second album Secaucus
4)Blur - Think Tank
I thought they were screwed when graham coxon left....
5)Jet - Get born
any album with a song in it called "Cold hard bitch" deserves a second listen XD Take it or leave it rocks
6)Mogwai - Happy songs for happy people
7)Elbow - Cast of thousands
8)The white stripes - Elephant
9)The strokes - Room on fire
10)Super Furry Animals - Phantom power |

Now THAT sounds like something I might like.
I don't buy nearly as much music as I used to, as manga has really diverted my attention (as well as my financial resources...) from it lately. So I'm afraid I'm pretty out of touch with what's going on in pop music right now. However, that's not going to stop me from posting my own top ten list.
You'll have to wait until December though
Oh, and welcome to the forums. |

I was going to say "that Hot Hot Heat" album, but it turns out it's from 2002...damn.
I guess I'll throw in The New Pornographer's Electric Version (not as good as Mass Romantic, but still pretty good). And that's like the only album from 2003 that I can recall listening to. And liking.
...Damn, I need to listen to more music.
Oh, I'll throw in Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, just because it has "Hey Ya!" on it. Despite the fact I haven't even listened to the rest of the album, and probably never will. Just because "Hey Ya!" is so damn good.
I'd make one awfully bad music reviewer... |

Here's my ten cents.
1) The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
Not actually my favorite album of the year but I don't think anything else can top it
2) Envy - A Dead Sinking Story
This is my favorite of the year, my favorite Japanese band releases a monster
3) Ten Grand - This Is the Way to Rule
Great album from an extremely original band, will be their final album because their lead singer/guitarist died
4) Small Brown Bike - Nail Yourself to the Ground
Only an EP, not a full length album, but it's just about perfect
5) JR Ewing - Ride Paranoia
They can do the attitude and energy better than any of these new crap garage bands
6) Under a Dying Sun - Supernova
A band that has meant a lot to me for a long time, and I'm happy to see them refining their sound
7) Stop It!! - Self Made Maps
Silly name, but the music they make is surprisingly original and interesting
8) Hot Cross - Cryonics
Very talented band with a dynamite live show
9) Thursday - War All the Time
Still a good album but probably the last one I'll buy from them
10) Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
It wouldn't feel right to leave this one out
edit: forgot one fantastic one that should probably replace one of these 10: Yage - Anders Leben, buncha Germans create their last and most incendiary album, possibly my favorite band ever |

AFI was a LOCAL band... I grew up BA (Bay Area) Punk and I used to go to their shows all the time... I can testify, however, that Mr. Havok got way too (a) old (b) self indulgent (c) fucking weird and I don't like any of their new stuff.
And Blink 182 is, well, Blink 182. Girls and idiots love it! |

Additionally, to quote Sammy the Mick from All Bets Off in an interview with Hand Carved Magazine:
Brian: Who's your favorite emo band?
Sammy: Oh my GOD!!!! (laughter) My favorite emo band? AFI (more laughter).
In no particular order. I'm not sure all of these are 2003...
Necromantix - Return of the Loving Dead
Psychobilly band I've liked for a while came out with a really great album. I'm really glad I got to see them perform live after the release too!
Dropkick Murpheys - Blackout
Another band I've liked for a while. They're pretty popular now, but fuck, who can't love that they used Woody Guthrie lyrics?
The Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music
My dad listens to these guys, but I can explore my sensitive side too!
warsawpack - Stocks & Bombs
The rhymes are just too fucking good. These guys are talented.
All Bets Off - Girls About Songs
I hated this CD when I first heard it, but when I went to their show at the Phoenix I was blown away and bought myself a copy (cold $3) and a free sample from this up-and-comer, Hammertime, which actually outdid the headliner
Well I obviously don't listen to enough new music... that's actually kind of pathetic. All my favorite CDs are from a few years ago... |

I'm throwing my hat into the ring:
- The Jealous Sound - Kill Them With Kindness
No more of the soft restrained vocals from their self-titled EP, but still not the screaming energetic choruses of Knapsack, Blair Sheehan finds a happy medium inbetween.
- Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
I don't know if it's the best album of the year, but it's still damn good.
- Alkaline Trio - Good Mourning
Matt Skiba's voice maybe going out on him, but Dan Andriano's in top shape on this album.
- Solea - Even Stranger
Damn if there aren't some good tunes on this EP.
- Reggie and the Full Effect - Under the Tray
It's Reggie damnit! Reggie! It may not be as good as Greatest Hits, but it's still damn good.
- Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Yeah, yeah, we've all heard the damn song hundred of times, but that doesn't degrade it. Besides, I can't help but love a band who sings a ballad about a football quarterback.
- The New Amsterdams - Worse for Wear
What can I say, I have a soft spot for neo-folk.
- The Black Keys - Thickfreakness
Just so damn cool.
- The White Stripes - Elephant
I dunno why I like this album, or this band, but I do. Wow, that's like three or four popular bands on this list already. Either I'm going soft or someone's playing a better quality of music. (Do I get to save some coolness points for liking the White Stripes before I found out they were popular)
- The Heavenly States - The Heavenly States
Hey, the boys from Fluke Starbucker are back, but I actually like them this time.
That's it for me, I'm surprised, I didn't even know I bought ten new albums, but apparently I did. |

Actually, you just lost some points for worrying about liking a popular band. But then again, I live in Japan, the land of kitsch, where liking crappy, mainstream music can sometimes be considered cool and hip. Me, I'm seriously wondering if I should start delving into the world of truly (and unintentionally) crappy Japanese 80s pop. But there's just something inside me that prevents me from buying an Onyanko Club CD...

The word "backlash" sprouts to mind here. Frankly, I'd rather see bands like the White Stripes becoming popular than bands like Limp Bizkit. Apparently, I'm not quiet at the level where I can like and appreciate Limp Bizkit as crappy music.
And Goddamnit, why has no one mentioned "Ai no Poltergeist" by Mayumi Kojima! |

I wouldn't like them popular or not. Trust me.
I take major issues with their drummer (the sister). |
