According to Reuters, Monster is lined up to be a movie.
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - New Line Cinema has acquired feature film rights to "Monster," a best-selling Japanese manga comic book series from author Naoki Urasawa.
"Monster" is a psychological thriller that tells the story of a young doctor who saves the life of a little boy only to find out a few years later that the life he saved was that of a brilliant killer. The doctor must then track down the young killer and solve a larger conspiracy.
Urasawa is regarded as a master of the distinctive manga comics style that originated in Japan, where "Monster" has been adapted into an animated television series and has spawned 18 volumes as a manga series.
The "Monster" mangas have sold more than 25 million copies in Japan, and it has a strong following in Asia and Europe.
The book's publisher, Shogakukan Inc., is executive producing the project. Shogakukan also was behind the "Pokemon" series.
The project also is backed by Trilogy Entertainment, which produced "The Outer Limits" TV series as well as the TV version of "Carrie." Feature credits include "Backdraft" and "Blown Away."

Monster is a great series, but can it be squished into a movie well...? There's so much involved, so many characters to develop, and in the anime and manga there's plenty of time given for things to happen. |

Absolutely, i always considered it capable of being a brilliant movie, cut out all of the slow urasawa stuff and just action... it'll just be the fugitive.
hope they stick with a japanese doctor, it'd stink if they whitewashed it (but they will) |

Can Monster be made into a good movie? Probably.
Can Monster be made into a movie that's faithful to the manga? I doubt it. |

Wasn't there a film being made by the guy who did Donny Darko that sounded an awful lot like it was based on 20th Century Boys? What ever happened to that?
Nothing to do with Monster but sort of in the same vein is there's an interview in this (almost last) months Ultra Jump with James Cameron about his Gunnm film. |

ouh... I like the idea: "fugitive". Maybe they can make "Monster" movie like "The Fugitive" starring Harrison Ford!? But then again, like 'Izumi' and 'Yudan Taiteki' said, they will only gonna make it good enough for Hollywood's market films... makin' faithful "Monster" readers dissappointed. |

I consider all of urusawas mangas as possible films. I always thought that his style is like mmaking a movie. Th first Volumes of Century Boys would fit even better as a real movie. AHHH, i can't wait to see what this looks like. |

It seems to be have been shelved, unfortunately. That director is working on some entirely different thing this year. I thought it was a really neat idea for a film though. Maybe he's just put it off for later. |

Okay...
It's called 'The Knowing' and was going to to be directed (and I thought written) by Richard Kelly who wrote/directed Donny Darko. It's now showing up on imdb as going to be directed by Alex Proyas who did I, Robot, The Crow and Dark City.

I get the feeling that this is becoming more and more vapour-like. |
