Silverbullit - Silverbullit
Not exactly something I've started to listen to recently, but something I continue to listen to. The Citizen Bird album is pretty good too. But ironically, I don't find the album I first heard from them (Arclight) to be very good. It always happens, I listen to something that's hyped at the moment, but then I discover that I like the older stuff better...
So, anyway, they have a definite Doors thing going on with this album, though ever so slightly more rock, and more electronic.

I think I may have already sent it to many of the people on this thread, though, so this may be rather superfluous...

Oh, and I think the band may be called Citizen Bird in the US.

I can't stop listening to good news for people who like bad news.

Yeah I've also checked out the moon and antarctica but none of the
songs really knock my socks off like a bunch on the newer album.

Sigur Rós - Takk
My being icelandic might make this sound a bit biased but whatever. A pretty fucking brilliant album, much better than the subpar '( )' thing (which kinda looks like some weird ascii tit-thing, or i'm just severely sex starved) and at least on par with 'Ágćtis Byrjun'.
The first song, Glósóli, falls into the familiar post-rock form, starting slow and ending with a really loud drum guitar orgy, all very stylish and 'give-you-goosebumps'-y. I don't feel like writing about the other tracks, but they shouldn't disappoint

ps. it'll be out in october or sum, so don't feel guilty about downloading it and buying it later, it's really really good and noone should have to wait 2 months to listen to it

Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me, Bug, Dinosaur (Remastered, yeah, all of them)
One of the reasons the eighties were pretty fucking excellent and why i weep when i talk to people who were there at the right time to see the original cast perform live (with lush and my bloody valentine at that).
I would say something about the albums themselves but i assume anyone who has any interest in these remasters already knows more than i do about Dinosaur Jr.

ps. the remasters make them sound so much prettier i could cry, it's totally worth the money i would spend on it if i wasn't dirtpoor so instead i sacrifice my buxxe on the altar of the adsl god

The Fiery Furnaces - Fiery Furnaces EP (or something)
I haven't listened to this enough yet but the first impression it gives is it being b-sides to blueberry boat (it probably is, come to think of it). Anyway, apparently not a lot of progress going on but who cares, i'm not bored with it yet and neither should you be.

I also saw Sonic Youth live the other day which was stunning, they're still quite amazing live, i got all jellylike knees when they played schizophrenia and everything and hearing them play the stuff on sonic nurse reminded me i should listen more to it, which i'm doing now, so.
Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
Slower, more melodic but still Sonic Youth. Maybe not their best but really really close to it,

Ohyeah, I've also been listening to some 8 unsorted hours of DMBQ (Dynamite Masters Blues Quartet). They are made of awesome and noise and some blues too. Really good music for lying in the dark pretending you just took too much mescaline and couldn't find your jefferson airplane albums or something.

So people have been saying the Delgados Delgados for awhile....
mainly Summer.

I got the Hate album from stephen and i thought mmm they are okay I
guess, but kind of slow for me.

But today while watching some inane tv show drama which does have
great music selection they played the Delgados song I fought the Angels
which was awesome! My interest is rekindled... I'm pretty eager to see
what the rest of the album is like aka Universal Audio

Btw... Eastern Youth ++ <3

The Dirtbombs - if you don't already have a look

I don't know why I bought this double cd comp. Don't even like the Dirtbombs_that_much (though whenever someone describes them it makes me want to give them another go). They're the sort of band I can have going on in the background for hours and vaguely enjoy, as long as I don't ever really pay much attention (also see: misfits, ramones and guitar wolf).

Scritti Politti - Early

Bought this on a whim after having them recommended to me. This is not at all what I expected, and I really can't tell whether I like it or am repulsed.

Husker Du - Zen Arcade

Yeah. Angsty Hardcore. Don't care for this at all. I bought it because I really liked their song "Blah, blah, blah".

James Chance & the Contortions - Buy

Finally and album I really like. When I first heard the Contortions' atonal racket I figured they just didn't know how to play their instruments, but then I heard a later album recorded under the alias "Jame's White & the Blacks" which sounds like really good, competent jazz-funk (or at least what I imagine competent jazz-funk sounds like - I'm not sure since I never listened to any).

DNA - On DNA

Pretty good obnoxious stuff, probably temporarilly eclipsed for me by the several James Chance cds that I bought at the same time as this.

Can - Future Days

Been meaning to pick this up. Generally knew what to expect but was still somewhat surprised by how listenable all the tracks are (unlike, say, Tago Mago which is 1/2 listenable and 1/2 speaking in tongues).

Can - Soundtracks

Probably won't listen to this much. The Damo Suzuki songs are generally OK, but everything ends very abruptly and the song's with Malcolm Mooney are painful and embarassing to listen to.

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance

Great. Wonderful album. Glad I gave these guys another chance.

Public Enemy - Apocalypse '91... the enemy strikes black

Picked up for two bucks. Not a bad album... I'll probably listen to it once every couple months or so.

The Birthday Party - Hee Haw

It took me several years to find a cd with Nick Cave that I really like, and this is it (not entirely true: the other B'day party albums are okay).[/b]

I find Zen Arcade to be an OK album but the terrible production is what really kills it for me. I think there are several great songs on there but it's hard to pick them out underneath the horrifically flimsy sound. I know they like to say Zen Arcade and Double Nickels on the Dime are both masterpieces that stand shoulder to shoulder but I'll take the Minutemen any day of the week.

I agree with that assessment, and do think it's an okay album in the context of other Husker Du stuff that I've heard (though to be fair, the other Husker Du stuff I've heard is mostly early and live). But I would expand the "production" problems to include the overall compostion. There are a few songs that I like on the album, but they're all at the beginning since I always lose interest partway through. 70+ minutes just seems too long for most bands to fill with interesting music, and this one is spread particularly thin. The only hardcore album I've liked enought to listen to very extensively is Damaged, and part of that is probably that it's not much more than 30 minutes long.

I'll give Minutemen a try though, I've never actually heard them.

The Replacements are my favorite Minneapolis punk band!

Is Nikki that bad? I agree that it's probably not their best work, but I think it has some good songs. The instrumental segment of "Long Tall Sally" is kinda neat, IMO. I'm seeing them next week btw. At the Budokan, of all fucking places. It's absolutely unbelievable how popular this band has become in recent years. Not very good seats, somewhere up in the balcony, so I doubt I'll enjoy it as much as the more intimate shows that I'm used to seeing, but I thought I should see them at least once before they break up (which I expect to happen any day now - they've changed drummers often enough).

Right now I'm listening to...

A No Tsuku Kotoba - Momonashi
Momonashi is a duo consisting of Jigen, Soul Flower Union's bassist, and Mihoko Kamimura, a spunky gal who sometimes sing backup for SFU. This album is awesome, awesome, awesome. Funk bass and enka melodies - it even has a Hibari Misora cover. And in stark contrast to the Quruli I'm seeing next week (or SFU, for that matter), their shows usually draw an audience of about 20 people...

Lately I have been digging this Serena Maneesh album. It's a Norwegian combination of the best traits of MBV shoegaze and Sonic Youth noisiness.

Gatsby's post kinda inspired me to give this album a spin, which for some reason happened to be in the CD carry case that I brought with me to Nowhere, Shizuoka (aka My Parents' House) - where I'm typing this from.

Quicksilver Messenger Service - Quicksilver Messenger Service
"Shout a warning to the nation/That the sword of God is raised/Babylon, that mighty city/Rich in treasure, wide in fame". Oh please. Great music though, if maybe not as good as Happy Trails.

I've also been listening to:

A Bigger Bang - The Rolling Stones
Yeah I know, shut up.

Tadaima - Yoeko Kurahashi
I was kind of disappointed with this album at first, going "dude, where's all the saba-daba-daba-ing and the sheer weridness that made Modern Girl such a great album?' It's all relative though - true, the album is kind of light on the saba-daba-dabas and the arrangements are probably more polished (string section in the opening track?), but her vocal style still qualifies as weird by most measures. I love it where she goes "watashi nado saketemo iino, saketemo iino, saketemo EEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHH!!!"

Bought 'Double nickels on the dime' a couple days ago and listened to it on shuffle pretty much the entire day whilst driving cross-state to visit family. Not at all what I expected, but a narly album. Thanks to stephen.

Listen to one of the first five Butthole Surfers albums at least once a week, and was listening to Swell Maps - 'Marineville a bit earlier: a good racket to be sick to.

Listened to Sparks - Whomp that sucker while reading the paper, and now before I turn in I'll listen to the Roches - We... wish the whole album was as upbeat.

Jesu - Heartache
perfect for cold, sunny days during which i drive to the airport for about forty minutes (this album is 39.55, two songs) to pick up my parents or something. Apparently it was out in 2004 but it doesn't sound hugely different from their last album but whatever

Shugo Tokumaru - L.S.T.
not as good as the first one but still has some really nice moments, mushina and vista are to die for

Hot Chip - Mexico
very weird when compared to the new stuff kinda like lo-fi betaband or something

Devo - Q:Are we not men? A: We are Devo!
best thing ever

and also everything Robert Pollard ever did which is long but mostly brilliant

ps. saw bjork, mum and sigurros perform at some 'protect nature' concert thing the other day but they were completely overshadowed by some horrible forty-something year old wearing pink spandex pants and nothing else screaming dr. spock
it was pretty cool
