| Most of the boxsets are now out of print. Even though its bad for AnimeEgo I would try getting them off of Bittorrent. Beautiful Dreamer is possibly my favorite movie ever (next to Do You Remember Love). Also, Takahashi is a total hack. The only good things she has ever done is Maison Ikkoku and Urusei Yatsura (and it was Oshii that actually made the tv series good!). |
Urusei Yatsura isn't really all that good. There's a lot of hits and a lot of misses, but all in all it's an essential series IMO. It just amazes me AnimEigo charges so much. :( I'd like to buy at least some of the series to support it, but man, it's hard to justify. I'm the kind of guy who buys DVDs when they go on sale. Generally under 10 bucks for movies, and like 25 or less (usually 20 bucks) for whole seasons.
I'd rather buy than get off of BitTorrent for series I actually do like. That said Saikyo Robo Daiouja has a box set with no English subtitles and costs frickin' $400-500 US dollars. :(
Ebichu was amusing but I dunno if I can say it's one of my favorites. Akira's also essential IMO. |

Oh yeah, Japanese dvds have been way overpriced from the start. I have wanted to buy the new Hokuto no Ken movies but 100 bucks is hard to justify for no subtitles (even though I watched it raw before I saw it subbed).
I know there UY has alot of hit and miss eps but I like to pretend that it was all awesome. The miss episodes are the ones that circle around Ten... the worst character in the show. Cherry is awesome though.
Oh, and go out and DL or buy Apocalypse Zero. It is one of the greatest shows ever made. |

That was a very good movie. My favorite Miyazaki film. |

Do you know any other movies of Lupin III that are nearly as good as Cagliostro? I've seen another one, and to be honest it wasn't all that great. I've seen much of the TV series as well. |

Macross Do you Remember Love is what anime WAS. Now look what anime is. Moe crap. Macross DYRL was a love letter to anime, for fans and by fans. And now look, moe. Moe has corrupted anime. Sorry for the random rant. |

Tastes change. While I enjoyed various incarnations of the Macross franchise, I watched DYRL again a few years ago, and while it had its great moments I couldn't really get over how...80's it felt.
Re: Lupin, I've seen about a dozen of the older movies (the newer ones have gotten progressively suckier and suckier, until I stopped watching them altogether a few years ago), and while they were all entertaining, Cagliostro is distinctly different from all of them: all of the characters are given a more warmer, human element, and it's, for lack of a better tern, more Ghibli-ish.
PS speaking of classic anime, anyone know where to get a DVD of Wings of Honneamise for a decent price? |

Forget The Wings of Honneamise DVD on Amazon. It's one of the worst translation of a movie to DVD/VHS ever and such a shame for it being one of the best Gainax has ever made.
someone has upped a 6.55 GB http://www.boxtorrents.com It's got the video from the R2 DVD which was the good one; then just burn it yourself. |

I don't think Neuro's particularly worried about the translation quality. |

Thanks for the boxtorrents heads-up, johngen: I was actually going to be lazy and wait for someone at Asian DVD Club to actually create an ISO for me using the R2 source, but I suppose I could just download/burn it myself with the exact same effect. |

Why do people hate the 80s so much? I never understand. The 80s were the best time for any movie.

Isnt Bandi releasing Honneamise like they released Patlabor the movie? Like 80 bucks, or something riddiculous like that. |

Tons of classics were created in the 80's. Movie-wise it was a great decade.
Anime-wise however, I can understand that a lot of stuff feels outdated. Though I guess that depends from person to person (way to state the obvious, me). |
