Q: Why was I banned from the channel?

A: I don't know. Most likely it was because you tried to search for something that is licensed. Maybe it was because you started spamming the channel with incorrect commands. Maybe it was because you were annoying an op. Maybe it was because an op was in a bad mood and picked someone to vent frustration upon (it happens, our channel is not a utopia of fairness and justice).

Q: How long am I going to be banned?

A: It depends. Probably a few days. We have to reset bans manually. This might happen when the ban list reaches capacity (100) or we might take off some every day or so to make sure it doesn't hit capacity.

Q: Will you unban me?

A: We ban around 20-50 people a day. We don't have time to review each person's particular case, and 98% of our bans are correctly done according to the rules of our channel.

Q: What can I do to avoid being banned?

A: Easy! Use our channel to get the stuff we release, not some random manga you just heard about. The #mangascreener channel exists to distribute the things we scanlate. Don't expect to find some kind of free market where you can find ANY manga you want. We don't care if you didn't know (insert manga here) was licensed in the US. You broke the rules and ignorance is not an excuse.

One good way to avoid getting banned is to not use @find at all -- use !list instead (which works better than !list).

Basic manners will get you far in not being banned as well. Don't expect to come into the IRC channel and get a full tutorial on how to download things. Don't type "@find beck 48" five times in 3 seconds. Don't complain about speed of MS releases or anything like that. Don't beg to have someone send you a file over and over again.

Copied straight from !rules in the channel:

1:Do not serve or @find licensed stuff. Fserves, use CTCP triggers only. No Guest nicks.
2:Things lacking in common sense, such as spamming and antagonizing ops, is likely to get you kicked.
3:Ignore these rules at your own peril! We will kick/ban without warning.
4:No !http command, no xdcc lists.
5:If you start typing in all capital case letters your intentions will be judged hostile and you will be dealt with summarily.
6:We no longer have a bot to remove bans, so we do it manually now. If you are banned, you can expect to be so for several days, unless noted otherwise

I only found out about IRC manga bots yesterday. I found mangascreener website, and looked under PROPAGATE IRC for directions. And the first thing they taught on looking for something was using @find. So I typed @find Monster. I got banned. I simply do not see how this is something I should be punished for Sad Yes, I'm a noob, yes I'm ignorant...but it was really discouraging. Any kind words for a sensitive noooob?

Yeah. Stop looking for licensed titles. Stop being so ignorant.

The very first rule:
1: Do not serve or @find licensed stuff.

How can you tell if it's licensed or not? That's for you to find out. Try manganews.net, or you can see from our projects page (http://www.mangascreener.com/project.php?id=5) that it is licensed.

Sorry, but the ban was completely fair. You didn't follow the rules which are posted in multiple places. We don't particularly care if that's "discouraging" or not -- we hope it discourages people from serving or searching for licensed manga.

I forgot to change channel, and typed ONE word in capital letters in the main chat. I've been banned for a week now.

I care.

I don't know what channel you're referring to, but it sure isn't #mangascreener
Now go find the right group/forum.
