Soo... I saw this title mentioned here a few times. Thus I went and applied my mad google skills on it, and saw some covers that tickled my interest quite a bit. It looks slice-of-life-ish (-_-*) ... and quirky...
Anyone that can tell me what it's about, and if it's any good? |

Mundane and quirky definitely nail it on the head. Summer Soldier recommended it to me and I was a bit put off by the 1st volume but it has grown on me a whole lot.
The author is really adept at tossing together several different kinds of humor and pathos in the stories but never lets it get too heavy or serious. Also the installments are short and Oda simply loves to drop them abruptly, sometimes without any sort of closure at all. Story is about Tomoo, a kid in grade school who lives in a Danchi (hi-rise apt. building complex) with his friends. He gets into trouble a lot and is dumb, whiny, etc. All about his misadventures at school and with the people in the Danchi, and being a kid in Japan in general.
All in all it's very odd and probably will leave most people cold on first read, but once you get used to it and recognize the author's style and voice, it's actually pretty funny and enjoyable. I'd like to do something by Tobira Oda but Tomoo is getting a bit long. On the other hand, his short story collections are fun but REALLY random and hit-or-miss... |

You have my thanks for that; but now I'm even more interested.
I hate when first volumes don't live up to my expectations. I'm always plagued with thoughts later on that make me want to give it a second chance, just to find out it IS great and that I could've missed out on it if I stuck to my original opinion.
Righto.
Is Danchi Tomoo comparable with anything else? Vaguely reminds me of Noramimi & Hanada... |

Sorry to revive this topic but I just saw it now.
I bought the first volume here in Japan and yes I think it's definitely quirky and the chaptres often end abruptly (Like a Monty Python skit) but all in all it's not bad. Though like I've mentioned before on here, Tomoo's whining gets quite annoying (at least in the 1st volume. I may buy more soon). |

You're insane, Tomoo wouldn't be Tomoo without his whining. May he whine forever and ever and ever. |

Well yeah I suppose you have a point. Though I did have a bias against whiny Japanese children before I read Tomoo (trip to the local Hoikuen will do that to you) so I guess that's no one's fault but my own. Re-reading the first chapter however, it became rather funny. Tomoo's summer schedule ftw. |
