At the Comic Con I picked up the first Maakies collection on a whim and I'm totally hooked. Nuanced delivery, weird headspace, fabulous art. Definitely need to look into ordering the others.

Haven't read it myself, but it looks interesting. Guess I'll check it out sometime. Plus, being published by Fantagraphics is always a plus.

He he... I remember when that first came out in France, they released two volumes before the editor went bust. Enjoyed the Pokemon Hater story and the one where the mangaka is rushing to finish his work with his assistants at a bank which is being robbed. Been a few years since I read it, but had fun memories... nothing great mind you... but fun!

Series stop being published when their editor goes bust in France? That's very odd...

Anyway, I really dig his style. Great old school artwork, and as over the top as it gets.

Also, reading some more old school shounen;
Ushio & Tora c1-9
This is just my kind of art. Hard to judge the story, as it's been pretty episodic. But I kind of like youkai stuff.

atarashii asa by kuroda iou

well, actually i only read the first chapter on the train just earlier, but anyway, highlights include hitler playing pachinko

it'll be the first time i read kuroda in japanese though so i wonder how it'll compare.

also

warau na by tsutsui yasutaka

a collection of short stories, i'm not going to pretend i know anything about him but he has wikipedia articles in english and japanese anyway so i don't have to.
i was actually recommended a different book by a friend who said he read it back when he was a kid and liked it. they didn't have that one so instead i just got the one with the nicest combination of cover and title (it was pretty close though, 'the last smoker' had a pretty cool cover too).
i'm not too far into it yet, but i seriously doubt this is anything similar to what my friend read. the second story is a description of rape, mutilation and murder (there's more to it than that, but i don't feel like going into it too deep) that is eerily similar to something i feel like i've read by kago shintaro at some point. at this point i wouldn't actually be surprised if they had worked on some stuff together at some point actually.

edit, here's the whole thing if someone is interested

I have mixed feelings about current One Piece story... Its awesome of course, but its just TOO awesome. I mean, frist we get Buggy, mr3 and mr2 teamed up, now we get fucking Jinbei, fucking Crocodile, and fucking incerdibly strong awesome fucking Drag Queen teamed up with Luffy. It just cant get any better Sad

I also finished Pluto, wich was ok, but nothing epic.

Also still reading Fairy Tale when im bored at work, and well, it get more and more cheesy...

Cross Game is still good after brake, though i hoped for some time jump. I still hope that it will be first Adachi manga that will go into pros. Those guys are just too awesome to end it on Koshien. Its about time for that, Adachi!

About non scanlations - lately they started publishing manga that I can buy, so I'm buying them. But not actually reading >.>; I picked up Ikar by Taniguchi and Moebius, The Ice Wanderer and other stories and Book of Wind by Taniguchi, Music of Marie by Furuya, Pumpkin and Mayoneese by Kiriko Nananan, Duds Hunt by Tetsuya Tsutsui and first volumes of Balsamist by Mitsukazu Mihara and Suppli by Mari Okazaki. And last but not least Disappearance diary by Hideo Azuma. So far ive read only Music of Marie, Ice Wanderer and Book of Wind. Need to read more :/

What did you think of Ice Wanderer?

I actually cried in the one story with the bear, but I'm not sure if that's because it's really that affecting or if it's just because I'm getting senile and going soft -- I mean sentimental.

It was typical Taniguchi, very visual, and yes, touching. I think my fave one was whale story - it didnt make me cry, but i was very touched and it made me think. I just love Taniguchi storytelling.

And well, I guess im getting soft too, i lately read short story by polish fantasy/sf writer, about Santa. It was 3 pages long, and it made me cry. First time since Lion King, and i was 9 when i saw it Sad

I just read the first volume of Ikigami, published by Viz.
The artstyle is quite appealing and well defined for a seinen. The story could go any way, there's intrigue, but the first part of the book was a bit too "easy".
I'll probably buy the second volume soon, though.

Blankets by Craig Thompson

The artwork, the story, the world, really touched me. And the artwork is just really, really beautiful.

I sooo wish Craig and Raina would have been together in the end... Embarassed
