Recently our web host asked me what people were looking for in a web host! If you guys are looking for a personal web host what are some things you're looking for.
I suggested to him that blogging is popular right now and that he might want to gear an account towards bloggers; cheap, medium bandwidth, easy to use. What do you guys think? We need responses, they want ideas and input!
Geoff: come up with a price, a package description, and what you think will sell...I'll put something up
Here's a great opportunity to influence a web host and maybe get a website package you're looking for! |

Well, high bandwidth for a reasonable price is always nice. A lot of my friends like to host songs on their webhost, so that other people could download whatever songs they are current listening to.
Unlimited Bandwidth is of course, pushing it... but at least 100 gig of transfer a month for around 7 dollars... =d |

Well, that was a serious answer.
I've seen packages for 9$ and 100GB of transfer.
I have a blog myself, but i host it at my uni, so i dont need a host or anything...
We all know there are many sites offering free hosting for blogs, and many of them offer many options of configuration. I'm talking about livejournal, blogger, xanga and sites like that. If someone is thinking about charging users for their blogs, they should be offering something more than those sites, which are FREE.
For example, PHP and MySQL support to install WordPress or any other free blogging software, and maybe a higher transfer BW. One of the problems i've seen is that some bloggers upload a bunch of pics and they run out of BW soon.
Hope that helps |

Here's a serious reply
1) Some form of database
2) Scripting. Php, .Net, Jsps... The more supported the better.
3) Decent web space.
4) Decent bandwidth. Also give the user two options.
"continue serving but charge" - if they go over, continue to serve their pages but charge them.
"disable the site and display a text file (no HTML allowed)" - if they go over this text file will be displayed. This text file is modifiable by the web master (and has a limit of how many characters is allowed in it). So say someone is running a wallpaper website and they run over. They can change the text file to "Hey, I'm done with the new wallpapers but we're going to have to wait for my bandwidth meter to reset."
5) Bittorrent tracker. Some websites will want to serve large files. As a web host you don't want said large files to be served off your servers. So instead serve the tracking information which will be a lot less bandwidth and pass the bandwidth off to others.
6) Price - obviously one of the most important issues. :) |
