i've gotten into the habit of checking the official japanese sites for different publishers/magazines so that i can keep up on the latest news, what chapter such and such a manga is at, etc. on the shonen sunday page, they have little "mangaka journals" where the various artists write little stories and what not, although very few actually do it with any regularity. one of them, by gosho aoyama, the author of detective conan, was too golden to leave untranslated, so i've re-written it here in english :)
while eating at a restaurant which i frequent on occasion, the waiter suddenly asked me, "what do you do for a living?"
"what do you think?"
"is it an internet thing?"
"no."
he kept spewing out a list of careers that were all completely wrong, so, fed up, i finally answered, "a mangaka."
incredulous, the waiter asked me, "w... which one do you draw? is it a manga i know?"
"um... probably... it's running as an anime right now"
at that, his face lit up and he said, "RUROUNI KENSHIN!"
"(...that's over, though) it's on TV every monday evening at 7:30."
then he said, "i'll go into the kitchen and ask everyone there!"
and so he left. 2 or 3 minutes later he returned, rather agitated, and sputtered, "INUYASHA!!!!!!"
"(.......oh... so close...) inuyasha is done by a very famous female mangaka named rumiko takahashi, so that would be incorrect. i look like a man to you, don't i?"
"oh... r-right..." he muttered, then smiled.
"it's not conan, is it?"
hesitantly i replied, "oh, good heavens no."
suddenly he looked as though he'd seen a ghost, and bolted away.
a short while later i could hear cries of "UOOOOOOOOO!!!!" and "KYAAAAAAAAA!!!" coming from the kitchen. i was starting to get a bad feeling.
when the young man came back, he was clutching 3 pieces of colored paper in his hand... now, i don't mind signing colored paper, but while i'm eating...? honestly.
so, the next time someone asks me what my job is, i'll just say, "it's an internet thing." |
