I was wondering if this has been addressed yet. What is Harold Sakuishi's inspiration for Beck? Is his manga modeled after any specific bands or genres of music? I wanna find some interviews or maybe Sakuishi should start a band and make a Beck CD!! Idea Idea

actually, there was just recently released a beck guide book that supposedly has an extended interview with sakuishi that probably answers all those questions, and enough other stuff to fill 200 pages. if only i had it...

I just picked up said book today, and it has 2 very long interviews with harold sakuishi about inspirations and such. also it has tons of lists of artists and cds that he recommends and uses within beck... so a definite clear inspiration for beck

Sounds great, could you highlight some of the bands we might have heard of?

A recent issue of Comic H has a lengthy Harold Sakuishi interview as well, although it focuses on his whole career instead of just Beck, starting from when he first started drawing manga as a little kid and on to Gorilla Man, Stopper Busujima (his best work IMO) and Beck. You know, I always though that his name was pronounced Sakuseki, not Sakuishi.

I really enjoyed Stopper Busujima (or the chunk of it i read in young magazine) but i don't know if i'd say it was better than Beck. I'd really like to know what sold you on Stopper Busujima.

Well the thing is, I think both Beck and Stopper Busujima are excellent, and the order of preference between those two ultimately boils down to personal taste. I gave Busujima the edge because of the humor; the series really cracked me up sometimes. Not that Beck doesn't have its share of funny scenes--I just thought that Busujima had more of it. Plus, I admire how Sakuishi took a theme that had been done to death in Japanese comics (pro baseball) and still make it work. And the fact that I like music more than baseball has something to do with it as well. I know that sounds really weird, and that it probably should be the other way around...I have trouble understanding it myself. But don't get me wrong, Beck is a fabulous piece of work, and I can easily see why it's so popular.

Well the reason i ask is simply because Busujima has for a long time been on the list of titles we'd like to do, but the problem is its out of print and popular enough to avoid ending up in most used book stores, so its pretty hard to get ahold of in the USA to scan... So i simply wanted to once again hear that its a good project and worth doing =)
