I'm getta go see it when I go down to LA, along with A Mighty Wind, Better Luck Tommorrow and Spun. And yes, my life is so boring that I actually drive down to LA to see movies. |

Ahh, finally got to see Cowboy Bebop on the big screen, and for an art film, it got the royal treatment.
At the small college theater right by UC Irvine, (it had been bought by Regal, but they still play only art, foreign and limited-release films, as well as giving certain benefits I'll touch upon later) they went as far to decorate the box office with crudely drawn Spikes and Fayes as well as the 'wanted' posters, something I found a great little touch since they were obviously imported, still bearing the 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' subtitle that was dropped from the American release.
The theater itself was decked out with broken computer equipment and dangling cables (I didn't catch on to this until I left the theater to use the bathroom and saw they had put cardboard pieces on the door to make it look like the Bebop side panelling, I just assumed this was your average, run down art theater), which was another nice touch considering CB has been out for a month. Talking to the staff before the movie, I found out they were all big fans of the series, and were just trying to give it the best possible atmosphere they could (speaking of the staff, I haven't met such a bunch of courteous or knowledgeable movie attendants at a chain theater in my life).
The movie itself was presented in Dolby Digital Sound, the format I prefer over THX, which is a little too overbearing at times, and the most striking aspect I found was the use of the new DPS (Digital Projection System). First off, I hadn't ever seen a movie presented in DPS, and secondly, I had never even heard of DPS being used in art theaters, so this is probably thanks to the folks at Regal (whom I now have a newfound respect for, even if they're ruining the theaters in my town). This was perhaps the cleanest, clearest movie I have ever seen, I was so giddy when that little blurb came up that I spilled my popcorn (I didn't really spill anything, I didn't even have popcorn, but I was giddy).
The movie itself was as good as ever, even if it was dubbed. I really don't like the work done on the tv series, but they did a fine job here, having only a few false moments in the dialogue. In fact, they even cleared up some of the more confusing aspects that the subbed version presented by slightly altering dialogue (something I fully support when used in moderation).
Of course, even the DDS, DPS, and good voice-acting couldn't change how mediocre the movie really is. Musically and visually the movie is a fine continium to the series, but the story is not there at all. For all of its foreign, animated, and arty nature, this movie is a popcorn flick, cut and dry. Perhaps not the best choice in anime cinema to be ported over, but still decent, and it's nice to see that it got a big screen treatment in a small scale theater.
That's it for me. |
