In Japan, the male audience is far larger than the female audience. The most popular shounen manga anthology, Shounen Jump, sells around 6.5 million copies per issue. On the other hand, the most popluar shoujo anthology, Ribbon (I think another one might have overtaken it), only sells about 2.5 million copies per issue. The ratio of shounen to shoujo anthologies also leans heavily to shounen.
I don't know about the net, since there's no real way to measure it. |

Mmm...I think you mean Shonen Magazine Weekly, not Monthly. So Jump overtook Magazine again? No wonder. A lot of Magazine manga these days look like SJ manga wannabes.
Of course, Magazine's downfall began when they started running this horrible manga called Love Hina... |

Hey, don't say such terrible things! Only manga magazine in Poland is running LH now! And if it gonna fall down...
And consider that they had Black Jack before in it... |

the thing with shonen jump and ribbon is, that shonen can appeal to girls, but a very small fraction of boys will be caught reading shojo(*coughs* piro!), so the sales of these magazines are completely irrelevant. |

I'm so to saying monthly magazine that its become almost reflex, of course i ment weekly shounen magazine ~_~
I prefer Weekly Shounen Magazine simply because every manga doesn't turn into some permanent fighting competition... except for Hajime no Ippo, but its a boxing manga... |

You know, 5 years ago, Magazine would NEVER have run a series like Rave and Get Backers. But I think I would prefer Magazine over Jump too, although I really can't tell, because I'm not an avid reader of either of those magazines. Anyway, if I were to put a rank to the three major publishers, it would be 1) Shogakukan 2) Kodansha 3) Shueisha.

He has a point there. Girls DO read shonen manga. Whereas the only people of the male race that read shojo are insane people like me. Although even I wouldn't read Ribbon...
Reminds me of how Inachuu Takyuubu was really popular with the girls... |

I completely agree with your evaluation of the quality of the main manga producing companies. Although i kinda worry about guys who read girls comics... thats kind of like guys reading and liking romance novels *shivers* |

Thanks for worrying Although it depends on your definition of shoujo. If you're talking about manga that are aimed at real shoujo, i.e. young girls, then no, I don't read 'em. But if you include manga that are aimed at mature women, then sure, I read them, and I'm not ashamed of the fact that I do. Heck, my favorite manga of all time is a Kyoko Okazaki work. I also enjoy works by Q-ta Minami, George Asakura, Kiriko Nananan, Yumi Unita, Marie Abiko among others. Besides, those artists that I mentioned aren't limited to the shoujo field. Q-ta Minami and Marie Abiko are regular contributors to Erotics F, George Asakura currently has a series running in Ikki, Yumi Unita used to have a series in Ikki, and Kiriko Nananan debuted in Garo, of all magazines!
If I was gonna be worried about something, I'd be worried about a guy that owns Candy Candy |
