I'll is yet another basketball manga, but don't
be turned off by it. Though there are countless
other mangas out there with the same popular
sport as its theme (eg. Slamdunk, Harlem Beat,
Dear Boys....), I'll is unique in its content and
characters. In fact, it turns out to be a more
profound manga than it appears, dealing with
interpersonal relationships and interesting
character development.
The story is
basically about a talented basketball player,
Tachibana Akane who decides to quit playing after
the last game at his junior high school. His
reason: "It's boring." On the other
end, we have another natural-born basketball
player, Hiiragi Hitonari who also quits playing
the sport. His reason is that he doesn't want to
be constantly in the shadows of his older brother
who plays college basketball. However, by fate,
these two got together in the same high school
and later ended up in the same ECA-basketball.
Their passion for the game starts to come back
again, into their lives, as they realise their
desires and dreams through each other.
This manga not
only stands out in its intriguing story
plotlines, the characterisation artwork is very
remarkable too. The details, from facial
expressions to body figures, from foreground to
background designs, are truly impressive and
amazing. Asada-kun definitely knows his
dimensions thoroughly. In addition to the two
main characters, supporting characters are just
as interesting too. There are also inserts of
side-plots for vigorous character treatment and
an extra boost to the entire story.
All in all, I'll
is one great manga series not to ne missed.
