Bokurano Volume 6 Bokurano Backstage Revealed - Page 195 - A sketch for the cover of Ikki, the girl with glasses from Kirie's battle. Her clothes were changed somewhat in the actual manga. All the sketches underneath the cover slips were done for Zearth. I'm simply showing them in chronological order. And of course, some of them ended up being used for enemy robots. This was another one of those. Glasses Girl's "Enigma II." The original Zearth design that became this one is under Volume 2's cover. The four-limb build is similar to Zearth's. Rough sketch of Glasses Girl's chair. It didn't turn up in the actual manga, but I really like the design. - Page 196 - Same as Zearth? "Cancer," from Kodama's battle. I settled on this design without any hesitation. "Gonta," from Moji's battle. The design was made to fit the demands of the function. The motif was that of a vise. However, the grip at the bottom appears weak here, and the strength of the two arms is suspect, so I turned it into a screwer with a ring. (Like flower petals?)(500m tall) The one in the final manga has four rings. The outermost ring goes down the furthest, and the calculations say that the two arms (legs?) should be seamless together when it's all the way down. Capable of pulverising any enemy it can trap. By the way, this one's name comes from the character of an NHK educational program. No doubt whoever was in charge of naming the robots was tired by the time this one came around. "Arachne II," from Maki's battle. The base of this one was "Arachne," from Kokopelli's battle, which I basically drew right from my mind into the manga. Since I cut some corners on that one, I tried to flesh out the design a little bit more this time. But it's still pretty lazy. - Page 197 - "Humbug," from Komo's battle. This was not based on an early Zearth design, but rather came from a design directly for this robot. I was originally thinking along the lines of something that "didn't appear to move much," but I wanted the four limbs to be attached odder than Zearth's, so I changed plans. (A slow-witted look?) In the end, it just looked like most of the others, though I didn't draw it particularly well in the story. The two below are from when I tried to switch gears. The right-hand design evolved into the final one. I think it would look pretty cool in 3D, though I can't guarantee that it would actually fit together correctly. "Bayonet," from Waku's battle. I didn't have any idea how it was going to fight like that. Another carryover from Zearth's design period was "Enigma," from Nakama's battle. You can see a pretty near identical sketch of it underneath Volume 5's cover. "Fig," from Chizu's battle used this motif. - Page 198 - I was thinking of using her for one of the main characters, but couldn't fit her into any of the stories I wanted to do, so she got left out. The plucky mother type. Costume design. Chronologically going from right to left. I actually thought the one in the middle was the best, but the fact that Nakama designed them didn't fit with that one right, so it became the current one. If Maki or Anko had designed it, I would probably have gone with a different design. The shoulder parts and whatnot have no connection to any anime in particular. I settled on that look by assuming that some guy in town used a vacuum press to mold that shape. If there had been a modeler in Nakama's surroundings, she could have at least had a model like the one on the left. - Volume 6 End -
