Back Flap: Aoyama Goshou's Illustrated Book of Great Detectives #10 - Auguste Dupin - There are many great detectives throughout history such as Holmes, Poirot and Akechi Kogorou, but it all began in 1841 when Edgar Allen Poe created none other than Auguste Dupin!! A member of a ruined aristocratic family, Dupin lives in a secluded old mansion on the outskirts of Paris. This young gentleman prefers the darkness of the night and keeps the window shutters closed during the day, choosing to meditate over his books by candlelight. His method of sleuthing is observation and analysis. Just by watching the actions and expressions of a person, he can correctly identify what they are thinking... however, the narrator, who is not Dupin himself but a friend, is always amazed and astounded. Yes... this is a two-man combo of the "Genius Detective" who uses brilliant, theoretical logic to solve cases, and the "Foolish Assistant" who admires him and records the adventures! Dupin appears in 3 books which are the founding of detective-dom as we know it. This is why Poe is oft called the "Father of Detectives". (My recommendation is "The Murders in the Rue Morgue")
Summary of events up to this point: Edogawa Conan, the little detective. He is actually the high school detective Kudou Shinichi. He was fed a poison by a mysterious syndicate that shrunk his body. So he hid his identity and took up residence in his karate-skilled girlfriend, Mouri Ran's house, the Mouri Detective Agency. One day, Kogorou, Ran and Conan were invited to the birthday party of Yotsui Reika, daughter of a wealthy family. And there, a murder occured. After a search for the suddenly-missing Reika, another party guest known as Nikaidou was found drowned in the fountain. Ran is also attacked in the same manner, but Conan saves her at the last moment. Later, Reika's drowned corpse is found in a bathtub. Conan discovers the trick, and determines the killer. Now comes the unraveling of the case...!!
