Monster Volume 1 : Herr Doktor Tenma Chapter 6 The BKA Man - Page 139 - Officers: Absolutely nothin' we can do. When do you suppose this flood's gonna drain away? How many decades has it been since we got one this big? They say it's the worst this century. That whole end of the century apocalypse thing? You'd think after the Berlin Wall fell, things'd change for the better. Shows how much we knew. They talk about the unification of Europe, but all we've gotten is everyone else's problems. Yeah, and these crazy crimes just keep popping up. It's enough to drive a man crazy. (splash) Sheesh... Ah, here we go... Chapter 6 : The BKA Man Officer: Inspector!! We're here. This is the place!! - Page 140 - [1995] [Cologne, Germany] Chapter 6 : The BKA Man - Page 141 - Detective: Both of them had their throats slit with a knife. A local housewife saw them as she was walking along the planks here. Lunge: And they are? Detective: The Reichmanns, who lived on Stich Drive. The locals are saying they hadn't been seen in half a month or so. The murder took place in the couple's home. We assume the bodies were stuffed in a closet and were flushed out in the flood. That's four such murders of middle-aged couple in all of Germany in the last two years... And all done in the same way. All wealthy middle-aged couples, so we presume it's robbery. We can't let any more of these happen. Lunge: Wait, it's too early to declare these robberies. If I check the data... (tap tap) Detective: Yes? - Page 142 - Lunge: For some reason, all of the couples have been childless. Detective: Y-yes, Inspector Lunge; as you say, this couple had no children either. Lunge: (tap) You wouldn't expect there to be excess similarities if it was only robbery, would you? Detective: N... no. But couldn't that just be mere coincidence? All of the couples lived better than middle-class, and had plenty of wealth to spare... Lunge: Have there been any valuables taken from the houses...? Detective: Yes!! Lunge: If these were the work of a single person, the small amount that was taken might make sense. However... Detective: If it wasn't a single person? - Page 143 - Lunge: Two of the houses had extremely strong locks and security systems. The criminal slipped right through them. And each of the couples was murdered with out a trace of resistance. People in the area heard nothing. A single crook would have to be extremely skilled to pull off all of these. Detective: I... I see. Lunge: Are you familiar with this man? Detective: No... Lunge: (tappity) Adolf Junkers, age 32. Arrested twice for suspected theft. But he nevers commits a direct robbery. His job is to open the locks... A so-called "locksmith." He was witnessed near the scene of the murders of three of the previous middle-aged couples. (tap) Detective: So... he's part of this?! - Page 144 - Lunge: I don't know. At any rate, the state police work here is done. Leave the rest up to the BKA. Detective: Er... Very well... M-may ask I you a question, Inspector Lunge? Is there any meaning to those hand movements? Lunge: (tap tap) Your name is Robert Ganz. You ate lunch with me during the '91 Rhine Riverside Hotel murder case. I believe you did some very good work at the '89 KB Tours Steamboat hostage crisis, correct? Have you stopped smoking? Detective: W... What an amazing memory... - Page 145 - [Dusseldorf - Eisler Memorial Hospital] Nurse: Go!! Ah! Kite: (flop) Nurse: I guess it's not going to work. I've never flown a kite before. Karl: It looked like it was just about to fly. - Page 146 - Becker: So? How was the girl last night? Tenma: Huh? Good... A very nice woman. Becker: That's all? She's the daughter of the director of the Dusseldorf Doctor's Association. You can't tell me you just had dinner with her and said, "Thanks, goodbye," did you? Tenma: Not exactly... I got a call during the meal. There was an emergency patient with a stroke, so I had to get back to the hospital... Becker: You WHAT?! Look, you need to take a break from this "Work is God" ideology you've got going!! Nurse: (tata) Becker: Okay, it's true that you've got no rush. Women will line up for miles for the chance to snag Dr. Tenma, head of the surgical department at Eisler Memorial Hospital! But if you keep your eyes stuck only on your work, you're gonna let the best ones get away, and then you'll really regret it!! - Page 147 - Becker: And... hey!! Are you listening, Mr. Exalted Surgery Department Head, sir?! Nurse: Oh, Dr. Tenma, good morning. Tenma: A kite, huh? This looks fun. Is it yours, Karl? Karl: My grampa gave it to me. He said we'll fly it when I get out of the hospital. Tenma: You suppose the center's a little off? Or is the wind just bad? Nurse: Dr. Tenma, do you know how to fly a kite? Tenma: I did it a lot as a kid in Japan. Now hold it up high, Karl. Karl: Like this? Tenma: Do you think it'll work? Here we go!! - Page 148 - Nurse & Karl: Ah! Tenma: Aha!! Karl: It's flying!! Tenma: All right!! Becker: {What the hell is he so happy about...? If I was in his place, I'd be juggling five women by now...} Tenma: That's it!! Let out some more string!! Karl: You're awesome, Dr. Tenma!! - Page 149 - Tenma: Get better soon, and you'll do his all by yourself, Karl!! Karl: Yeah!! Tenma: Today's operation is a parasellar meningioma extirpation. We'll use a right pterional approach. Observers: Now watch carefully. Dr. Tenma himself is performing this operation. - Page 150 - Tenma: I'll open the right silvian fissure, absorb and remove enough spinal fluid, then move towards the optic chiasm. Observers: What an amazing operation. The brain is barely retracting at all!! Look how easily you can see the tumor's attachment to the endocranium!! He truly is a prodigy of a doctor. You resident trainees must also learn to always treat the brain with great kindness. He really IS amazing!! Dr. Tenma is BETTER than they say!! Machine: (beep)(beep)(beep) - Page 151 - Light: (flash) Junkers: (huff)(huff)(huff)(huff) (huff)(huff) Y... Aaaahh!! - Page 152 - Junkers: (dash) Driver: Ah... H... - Page 153 - Driver: Y... Yaaah!! Bystanders: What happened?! It's a traffic accident!! Driver: Hyaaaaaah!! Bystanders: Someone's down!! Aaaah, he bleeding!! Call an ambulance!! Driver: I-it wasn't me!! It wasn't my fault!! H-he just jumped out!! It's not my fault!! I swear!! He just jumped right out of nowhere!! Like something was chasing him!! - Page 154 - [Neue Rhine General Hospital - Dusseldorf] Lunge: What is the patient's condition? Doctor: I'm sorry... There's nothing we can do at the moment... Lunge: You must do SOMETHING, Doctor. Doctor: B-but, Inspector Lunge... Lunge: This man is the patient, yes? Doctor: Y-yes. Lunge: He is an extremely important reference in a case. With this man's testimony, we may be able to pick out a thread that will unravel an entire string of serial murders at once. We cannot have him die here. - Page 155 - Doctor: But he has fractured his skull, and the CT is showing an acute hematoma as well. He's in critical condition. My hospital cannot save him. Eisler Memorial Hospital does have the man they call the greatest brain surgeon ever, so if there was someway he could come here, perhaps... Lunge: Greatest brain surgeon ever? (tap) You mean Dr. Tenma. Doctors: Thank you so much for coming all the way out here. We ask for your gracious assistance. Tenma: What's the patient's condition? Doctor: He's currently in a stuporous state, Dr. Tenma, and one of his pupils is dilated. - Page 156 - Lunge: Hello, Dr. Tenma... Tenma: I'm sorry... Who are you...? Lunge: It has been nine years. We met at the director's funeral. Tenma: Ah yes, you were from the BKA... Lunge: Inspector Lunge. It's been quite a while. That case is still under investigation. Do not worry. Tenma: Oh... Thank you for your hard work. Lunge: You see, the director, surgical department head, and chief brain surgeon were all poisoned at the same time. I will not allow this case to go unsolved. - Page 157 - Tenma: Thank you very much. I have an operation to attend to... Lunge: No, I thank you. Please complete this operation, for the BKA's sake. Tenma: What? Lunge: We must have that patient alive at all costs. To solve the case. I'm counting on you, Dr. Tenma. Tenma: I am not performing this operation for the police. I am doing it for the patient. Lunge: Just as well. Doctor: Now, Dr. Tenma, the x-ray room is this way. Lunge: Ahhhh, so you've become the Surgical Department Head, Dr. Tenma. You seem to have gotten quite far ahead in the world!! - Page 158 - Tenma: Hmm... And your point? Lunge: Well, it's such an accomplishment for one so young. With your vigor, the director's position won't be far off next term, will it? Tenma: No, I have much further to go. Excuse me, I'm in a hurry. Lunge: It was a case with very little evidence. The investigation of the Eisler Memorial Hospital murders has been quite a stormy ride. The only clue we have is the candies laced with nitric acid found in each of their bodies. That method means the crime must have been intellectual. - Page 159 - Lunge: An intellectual crime means there was some kind of power relationship between the victim and the assailant. Tenma: What are you trying to say? Lunge: No... pardon me. In my line of work, one must consider these things all year long. At any rate, do not worry. There is no crime I have worked on that I have not solved. Not one. Tenma: I'll be awaiting the results. - Page 160 - Lunge: As for the person who gained the most after the Eisler Memorial Hospital murders... Tenma: We will now open the skull and remove the hematoma. If we don't hurry, the hernia will grow worse. Lunge: There is only one possible answer... - Page 161 - Lunge: You, Dr. Tenma. Machine: (beep)(beep)(beep) - Page 162 - Doctor: Thank you so much for taking the trouble to come all the way out here, Dr. Tenma. Tenma: Not at all... How has the patient's condition progressed? Doctor: Well... he's conscious now, but his right pupil is enlarged, and he's still numb on the left side. Tenma: Then his recovery is well on its way. The numbness should subside immediately. He sounds like he'll be fine. Oh, and if the police want an interview, tell them no, for the time being. Doctor: Yes... but that Inspector Lunge from the BKA is so persistent... Door: (click) Tenma: The patient's recovery comes first. Door: (batam) - Page 163 - Tenma: Mr. Junkers, can you understand me? Can you see my finger? If you can answer, please do so. Yes? Junkers: He's coming... - Page 164 - Junkers: The monster... Is coming... Tenma: Monster? - Chapter 6 End -
