Security: From his mouth. Nihonmatsu: Like what? Security: I don't know... like it was checking the light or something. And why is this the only soldier here? Where are the rest? Nihonmatsu: I'll drive this back so we can look at it; is that all right? Security: Take it away, ma'am. - Page 27 - Men: How's the water level? We're sending a waterworks bot down right now. Ichikawa: If the well level doesn't come back up, we can't test-run the plant. And we won't have a thing to do today. Iguchi: It's not a precursor to an explosion, is it? Ichikawa: It's only low water. (nothing more, don't start rumors) We're just looking for the reason why! - Page 28 - - Page 29 - Nihonmatsu: OK, we're all done. Everything's checking out green. The remote receiver was gone; I think the SDF might have taken it back with them. Hyakuri: Why would they do that? Nihonmatsu: I don't know. The soldier in the crawler was dead. It's kinda weird that he was the only guy in it, though. Oh well, we can ask the base what's up. Hyakuri: So, no problems aside from a missing receiver. Nihonmatsu: Is the water back? I need to take a shower. Ichikawa: Not yet. Chopper: Self-Defense Force - Page 30 - Com: Chief, we've got a Lieutenant Colonel Shinada here to see you. Sanada: So I hear. Shinada: I am Shinada. Sanada: Sanada, construction manager. Shinada: Well met. The 13th Regiment and 306th Engineer Battalion met with a powerful enemy near the peak last night and were nearly wiped out. According to survivors, the enemy was- Sanada: In the shape of vegetables? Shinada: How did you know?! Sanada: There are roots in our well, sucking up all the water. Now progress is halted, and Japan is in peril. Shinada: Chief! If these are the same things responsible for killing my comrades, we must wipe them out! Sanada: Oh, Colonel. We have one of your deceased soldiers resting in our morgue. Would you like to see him? Shinada: By all means! Sign: Morgue - Page 31 - Sanada: Right in here. - Page 32 - Signs: Morgue Loudspeaker: This is Sanada, your construction manager. All company representatives are to meet at construction headquarters immediately. I repeat... - Page 33 - Nihonmatsu: And not a word about the water. Ichikawa: I don't like how we have to come directly. Oh well. I'd better get moving. Sanada: Thank you for coming. This is Lieutenant Colonel Shinada. Men: Mr. Sanada, what about our water? We can't use the cable car! We can't even test-run to get back online. Please tell us what you DO know about what's happening! We can't even cook rice without drinkable water. Sanada: If you'll calm down, I will tell you. - Page 34 - Ichikawa: What the-?! Men: Mmmf. Mglphf. - Page 35 - Men: What was that sound? Uwaah! Sign: Morgue - Page 36 - Iguchi: Oh, Ichikawa. Is the meeting over? Ichikawa: (pant)(wheeze)(gasp) (pant)(pant) Nihonmatsu: Were you running, Ichikawa? You know the air's too thin up here...! Ichikawa: (hlose) (hlose the) (hlose the hoor) Nihonmatsu: What? Close the door? Ichikawa: (hlose the hoor) - Page 37 - Ichikawa: Major trouble! All this crazy stuff happened! The place must look like a zombie mansion now! That must be why the water's gone. Nihonmatsu: Oh well. Let the military handle it. Ichikawa: No, we can't wait for them! Besides, they'll probably use a bomb or missile to blow them up, and everything will be destroyed. We have to get rid of that thing, so we can get back on schedule! Nihonmatsu: Wait, are you more worried about work? Ichikawa: This is no ordinary construction! If we can't stop an eruption in time, it'll have a terrible effect on the Japanese people, if not the entire world! There is an incredible duty to this job! It's more important than any man's life, down the mountain! People may climb back up afterwards, but the time we spent will never come back!!! - Page 38 - Nihonmatsu: ...huh? Wait a minute, are you saying... Are you saying we're responsible for taking care of this ourselves? That's the military's job. Iguchi: We have families down there, Ichikawa. Ichikawa: The soldiers have families, too! You don't understand. We might be the only people here in any position to do anything. Nihonmatsu: We're here to do our jobs. I wasn't hired for any monster-killing. Jose: You're so young, Ichikawa. You have to phrase it like this: We've got Japan's greatest machines and Japan's greatest operator, so let's go exterminate those pests! Nihonmatsu: Whoa, whoa, wait a minute! - Page 39 - Nihonmatsu: Oh, fine. What can we do? Jose: We should probably try to go into the building and cut down that tree without harming anything. We've got that giant rebar and the dozer blade. Enter the loading dock and then find the tree trunk and cut it. Nihonmatsu: Oh yeah, THAT sounds easy. Ichikawa: I'm sorry, I was being tactless. Nihonmatsu: Act too self-righteous and people will back off. Be sure to tell everyone who saved the day, when I get back! Hyakuri: We'll take #2, Ichikawa. Nihonmatsu: Tell the military they should have used our vehicle instead! Teach them not to buy those expensive tanks and missiles. - Page 40 - People: It's closed up. Wanna get out? No! Raise the blade, lower the cabin. Full speed ahead. Oh boy. - Page 41 - Nihonmatsu: Use whatever you can get your hands on! Whoa! - Page 42 - People: You OK up there, Nihonmatsu? Ugh! Take that, you freakish monsters! Sorry dudes, you're in my way. My bad. Here, Jose! This fat one! - Page 43 - Nihonmatsu: Whoa... is that that Sato soldier? Well, everything seems to have sprouted from him, so I guess he's the root of it all. Jose! We're pulling this guy out! - Page 44 - Nihonmatsu: Jesus, why are they only attacking me?! Take THAT! - Page 45 - Nihonmatsu: Gack! Jose: Nihonmatsu! Nihonmatsu: Why don't they attack you, too? Jose: Dunno. Ichikawa: They didn't attack me either, during the meeting! - Page 46 - Nihonmatsu: It's the cigarettes, Jose! You and Ichikawa are smokers! They hate tobacco smoke! We've got some in storage, right? Throw 'em all in the well!! - Page 47 - Ichikawa: But then we have no water. Nihonmatsu: We can make another pipeline. Hell, the makers wanted to sell off another well-digging shield machine! Using our machines to dig is better for the economy... Jose: OK, OK, just help cut the film. - Page 48 - Ichikawa: We can probably last four more days on this food. Better go to the warehouse before we run out. Nihonmatsu: Go ahead and cut a path over there. We'll be here. Ichikawa: What? I have to go? It's really quieted down out there. Right? Do you think the smokes worked? Nihonmatsu: If they did, someone would be knocking on the door to let us know. Now sit down. Jose: Man. How did you get so tough at this game all of a sudden...? - Chapter 18 End -
