Volume 35 : Captain
go back

Inside Cover: There is a theory known as "Nanba-walking."  It says that pre-Meiji Japanese used to walk by extending their right arm with their right leg, left with left.  This makes me think that ancient Japanese were very nervous people.  The reason they were nervous was of course, because their secret crush Mariko would be attending tomorrow's piano recital.  When your fingers are too short to reach the black keys well, you need a plan to conquer this weakness, which is why today they will hike into the mountains to fight a bear!! Volume 35, start!!!

Back Cover: Luffy and Usopp come to blows over what to do with the Going Merry.  After a sorrowful fight, Luffy is forced to make a shocking decision, as captain of his crew!!  Where will the Straw Hats go after this...?!  An ocean adventure romance in search of the "One Piece"!!

The Story of One Piece, from volume 1 to volume 35: It is the Great Pirate Age.  Countless pirates have raised their flags and gone to battle to find the legendary pirate king Gold Roger's hidden treasure, "One Piece."  Luffy, who yearns to be one of those pirates, sets off on a voyage to become the Pirate King!!
After an adventure in the City of Gold on an island in the sky, Luffy and crew decide to look for a shipwright to join the crew and fix up the Going Merry.  But on the way, they are stopped by the Foxy Pirates and challenged to the fearsome "Davy Back Fight," a three-round game that can take your crewmates away from you!  After a win and a loss, Luffy is on the verge of being defeated by Foxy's powers, but wins through the miracle of afro power.  Now Marine Admiral Aokiji appears, threatening them with the terrors of Robin's past!  What does this encounter portend for our crew?! Robin seems pensive...  The crew finally arrives at the "Water Metropolis" Water Seven, where the world's greatest shipwrights gather.  With the gold they received from Sky Island, they commission the island's best carpenters, the Galley-la Company, to repair the GM.  While babysitting the ship, Zoro fends off the bounty-hunting Franky Family.  Robin, off on a different errand, overhears the name "CP9" and simply vanishes...  After assessment, it is determined that the keel, the backbone of the Going Merry, is irreplaceably damaged.  Will you never sail again, Merry...?
