Story. Rookies is the newer work by the author of Rokudenashi Blues, a 42-volume epic about boxing and high school thugs, considered one of the greatest Jump classics. Like RB, Rookies is a story about high school thugs and sports, except this time it's (surprise surprise) baseball. Koichi Kawato is a new teacher at Futakotamagawa Academy, and his interests include helping delinquents with no future find their own dreams, and quoting proverbs (fun fun). Unlike some other baseball manga I've read, Morita has a knack for individualizing all the players very well and continuing to develop their characters in between story arcs. Rookies ran in Weekly Jump from 1998 to 2003, to a final total of 24 volumes. Being that this is a story about punks in high school, there is lots and lots and lots of naughty language, so beware if you're sensitive to that kind of stuff. Also note, this is the first series in which I've tried taking out those unsightly extra u's in names (ex. Kouichi Kawatou become Koichi Kawato), as that's something that's been kind of bothering me lately.
