Story. The title translates to "Ultimate Weapon Girlfriend". The alternate title "She, the Ultimate Weapon" is misleading, as "kanojo" can stand for either "she" or "girlfriend". However, in this case it is most definitely "girlfriend", according to the author himself. Saikano is probably the most gut-wrenching manga I've read thus far, so pent-up with emotion and angst that it is often quite painful to read. It is poignant to the extreme and a rollercoaster of a ride if I've ever seen one. The title says it all; this is a story about a boy and his girlfriend, who is literally a government-created superweapon. It sounds like the set-up to a potentially awful third-rate anime, but trust me, it's not. Saikano was published in Big Comic Spirits 2000 to 2001, for a total of 7 volumes.
Status: Due to Viz's licensing and imminent release of the title, and the amount of time necessary to translate it, I've decided it is not worth the effort to continue.
